Uniblue has just released a very handy utility for updating your computer device drivers. Driver Scanner 2009 is a sensible solution for upgrading old or outdated system drivers and it is part of the PowerSuite 2009 computer optimization program. DriverScanner 2009 searches your computer for all installed drivers and references what it finds with their comprehensive database of drivers then gives you the tools to update you computer with the latest, safest versions.Outdated system drivers can significantly decrease the computer performance but updating them on your own can be a nightmare. I have crashed my share of computers by updating drivers and have repaired many more for the same reason. DriverScanner 2009 is Microsoft Gold Certified so the chances of crashing a system with the help of DriverScanner 2009 are minimal. Just in case something happens, I first created an image of this computer before doing a review of DriverScanner 2009.

As with all of the Uniblue utilities, they offer a Free Scan to let you know if you need to purchase the program. The computer I am using for this review is loaded with Windows Vista Ultimate and has an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU running at 1.86GHz. Let’s see What DriverScanner 2009 recommends for driver updates.

The installation was very quick and uneventful. After the install was complete, I started DriverScanner 2009 and here are the results of the scan. The driver update utility found seven out of date drivers on this fairly new system. It found that the display adapter, network adapter and a few system devices were out of date. DriverScanner 2009 also shows a level of safety of the drivers it wants to install. The levels are Safe, Moderate and Risky. All of the drivers it wants to update are marked safe. Being that Uniblue is a Microsoft Gold Certified partner, I smacked the Download All button.

Once the drivers were downloaded, they needed to be installed. When the Install Driver button was clicked, the following screen popped warning me all drivers can cause unexpected problems or create conflicts with other drivers. DriverScanner 2009 recommended that I backup my drivers first using the Backup tab on the main interface. I thought that was a very good idea so I clicked on the Do Not Install button.

After clicking the backup tab I was given a list of all of the drivers on the PC with detailed information about what they are. I checked the box to perform a complete backup of all the drivers.

The backup of all of the system drivers was a quick process. When the process was finished, I downloaded and installed all of the drivers that DriverScanner 2009 recommended and rebooted the computer. It did reboot. That’s always a plus when system drivers are updated! Uniblue is a trusted source of driver updates so I wasn’t worried. After the reboot, I started the Uniblue DriverScanner 2009 utility and found that all of the system drivers were up to date.

If you feel that your computer may be unstable because of outdated system drivers, the safest way to update them would be with the DriverScanner 2009 utility.
